Fragile time-critical courier in Chelmsford

Tasito carries fragile and time-critical consignments across Chelmsford, off Widford Industrial Area and Westway on the south-western side, Waterhouse Business Park and Bilton Road in the same corner, Dukes Park and Hedgerows at Springfield, the office sites at Chelmsford Business Park and Springfield Business Park, and north of the city at Drake's Lane in Little Waltham and Waltham Road at Boreham. Rignals Lane at Galleywood, Church Street at Great Baddow and the BAE Systems site at Great Baddow are on the same patch. Instruments and control equipment, electronic assemblies, print and point-of-sale work with a finished face, machine parts, prototypes and single pieces that cannot be remade inside the deadline.

What the service changes here is that the handling is settled before the van leaves, and nothing about the item is decided at a kerb. Chelmsford is around fifteen miles from our Essex base, which we reach up the A130 from Rettendon, and bookings run until 4pm, Monday to Friday.

Which part of the city, and what it means for the carry

Chelmsford's commercial land is spread out, and the address changes the job more than the mileage does.

Widford and Westway sit off the A1016 on the south-western side, which is the quickest corner for us because we come up from Rettendon anyway. Those are estate and trade counter addresses with yards, so the van gets alongside the door and the carry is a few paces.

Dukes Park and Hedgerows at Springfield, and Drake's Lane and Waltham Road to the north off the A12, work the same way, and the northern estates are often reached before we would have got through the city.

Chelmsford Business Park and the Springfield office sites are built around service bays rather than loading docks, so we come in with a smaller vehicle than the item alone would call for. On a delicate consignment that is the right answer anyway, because a van that gets near the entrance shortens the distance the piece is carried by hand.

How the roads behave

Two things decide a Chelmsford window and neither of them is the distance.

The Army and Navy junction backs up in both peaks and there is no clever way round it, so a collection booked for a quarter past eight in the city centre is a different job from the same collection at ten. On a fragile booking we would rather pick the hour with you than put the driver in it.

The A12 is the other one. Northbound at the Boreham interchange and southbound at Margaretting are the two places that go, and when the A12 shuts there is no parallel road worth having. Where that happens mid-job we reroute through the villages where it helps and call you with a revised time rather than letting the tracking go quiet while your item sits in a queue.

How the consignment is handled

A dedicated vehicle, your consignment, nothing else in with it, your loading door to theirs. Collection and delivery are in the same hands, and the name taken at booking is the name that signs.

Everything wrapped, everything tied. Control gear and instruments can look untouched on arrival and still sit outside their tolerance, so a tolerance is worth stating at booking and the restraint gets built round it. Print and point-of-sale with a finished face goes in face inward and braced, glazing stands upright with the edges covered, and a surface due for inspection carries nothing on top of it.

Packing and case-making are trades we leave to the people who do them. The driver's part is to look over what has been presented and say, at the dock, if it will not make fifteen miles of the A130 and the A12, which is better spoken there than found out on the road. Where a case has to be made before the piece travels at all, that is raised when the booking is taken, so the mileage is not spent twice.

The signature at the agreed point is where we stop. Installation, unpacking and commissioning belong to another trade, and their time is better set for after ours than alongside it.

What we send and what fits

Smaller is usually right. A short wheelbase at 450kg in a 2.1m load space suits instruments, assemblies and single pieces, and it gets into the service bays at the office parks where nothing larger will. A medium at 800kg takes two standard pallets or three Euro.

Where it is length doing the limiting rather than weight, a long wheelbase runs to 3.3m for three standard pallets or four Euro and an extra-long to 4.2m for four standard or five Euro. Six of either go in a Luton at 1,000kg, 4.2m by 2.0m by 2.1m inside, which suits a fragile item that is bulky as well; ask for the box body and its tail lift where the far end has no forklift, or curtain-side where it has one. A piece too long for a van door goes on the flat bed, 2.7m at 800kg.

UK pallet sizes explained covers standard against Euro if you are working out what fits, and the fleet page carries the full dimensions. The fleet is FORS accredited, renewed for 2026.

Where Chelmsford work goes

South into London on the A130 and A13, which is most of it. Further up the A12, where we pass Witham and Braintree anyway, towards Colchester. Southbound we pass Billericay, Wickford and Basildon, and Brentwood sits on the A127 leg.

Chelmsford is outside the ULEZ and outside the Congestion Charge, so nothing applies at this end. Where the delivery address is in London we tell you which charges it picks up before we set off.

Other services we run in Chelmsford

Same-day courier where the goods are robust and only the deadline is pressing. Two-man delivery where there is nobody at the far end and the piece needs two sets of hands. Multi-drop where several delicate items go out to a run of addresses in one planned sequence, which suits the print and point-of-sale work. Next-day courier where the item is delicate and the deadline is tomorrow morning.

The fragile time-critical courier service page has the booking detail, including what happens when the A12 shuts mid-job.

Chelmsford questions

Same-day already puts the consignment on one van with no depot handling. A fragile booking settles the rest before the van moves: how the item is restrained, which face matters, who meets the driver and whose signature closes the job.

Neither is work we take on. We carry what is presented, and whatever has to be said about it is said at your dock.

They sit on the side of the city we approach from, so they are among the quickest Chelmsford collections we do. Call us and we will tell you what is free. Add time between seven and nine, because the Army and Navy will have gone by then.

We reroute through the villages where that helps and call you with a revised time. We will not sit in it and let the arrival time slide quietly while your consignment is in the back.

Yes, and for those sites we come in smaller. They are built around service bays rather than docks, so a long wheelbase or less is the right vehicle, and on a delicate item it shortens the carry as well.

That there is a tolerance attached, and what it is. Equipment can look untouched and still sit outside its tolerance, and knowing changes how it is secured rather than how it is driven.

Yes, the A12 mileage is already being paid for, and Witham and Braintree sit on the same route if there is a third stop. Give us the deadline at the final address and we sequence backwards from it.

Enough for a short conversation about the item, the access at both ends and the signature. At fifteen miles an hour's notice makes a real difference to the hour we can offer, and a two-person crew or the refrigerated vehicle wants longer.
