Fragile time-critical courier in Colchester

Tasito moves fragile and time-critical consignments across Colchester, from Severalls Business Park and the Whitehall estate through to Moorside and East Gates, the Cuckoo Farm and Stanway sides and the institutional addresses at the garrison and the university. Precision components, instruments and control equipment, glass and finished panels, electronics, prototypes and one-off pieces that cannot be replaced inside the deadline attached to them.

A dedicated vehicle with no depot in the middle of it. Colchester is about forty miles from our Essex base, up the A130 to the A12 and then north, which makes this a planned movement rather than an improvised one.

Which estate, and what it means for handling

Colchester's employment land sits mostly north of the town, and the three main areas are not equally easy to serve.

Severalls Business Park is the largest at roughly 73 hectares, with Telford Way, Wyncolls Road, Heckworth Close and Brunel Way among the addresses on it. Direct access off the A12 junctions, estate roads and yards, so a vehicle reaches the door and the carry is short.

Whitehall Industrial Estate is about 30 hectares, and the council's own employment land study records parking difficulties there. On an ordinary consignment that is an inconvenience. On a delicate one it changes the vehicle, because a van that can stop outside your unit keeps the carry short. Have the consignment ready and it is a non-issue.

East Gates and Moorside is the area to tell us about in advance. The same study found inadequate access and servicing there as well as parking problems, so we allocate a smaller vehicle than the load alone would suggest and ask for somebody who can meet the driver.

Cuckoo Farm sits south of the A12, with the University Research Park aimed at technology and knowledge-economy firms. Stane Park and Tollgate are on the Stanway side, Anderson's at Marks Tey sits directly on the A12, and Langham Airfield covers light engineering.

What we are usually carrying

Precision components and finished parts off the Severalls units, where the face that matters is the one somebody inspects on arrival.

Instruments and control equipment, which can arrive looking undamaged and still be out of calibration. If a consignment has a tolerance attached, tell us at booking, because it changes how the item is secured rather than how it is driven.

Glass, mirror and finished panels for the fit-out trade, which are heavy for their size, strong in the plane and weak at the edge. These travel upright and supported rather than flat.

Prototypes, jigs and display units, where there is no second copy if the piece arrives damaged.

What booking ahead buys you

Booked ahead, a Colchester movement runs on a planned route at an hour we choose, the far end has a window it can work to, and the driver has time in hand at the moment the item is in their hands. That is worth more on this service than on any other we run.

Where today is the deadline, call us and we will say where the nearest suitable vehicle is and give you a window we believe.

If your deadline is a freight cut-off or a build time rather than close of business, give us the actual time and we work backwards from it with room in hand.

How it is handled

Everything is blanketed and strapped. Panels and glass travel upright and supported, and nothing is ever stacked on a finished face.

Packing and crating are not services we offer. What we will do, at your own premises and before the item is on the vehicle, is say if the packaging will not survive forty miles of A12, and we would rather say it at collection than drive it. Where a piece needs a purpose-made case first, we tell you at the point of booking so the journey is not wasted.

Our responsibility runs to the signature at the agreed point and stops there. Unpacking, installation and commissioning are a separate trade, and at this distance it is worth having their time arranged before ours.

The garrison and the institutions

Colchester Garrison is a significant employer, and military sites run their own access arrangements: passes, security, named contacts and sometimes a vehicle check.

None of that presents a difficulty when it is arranged in advance. Tell us the gate, the contact and the pass arrangements at booking. With those in hand the driver goes straight in. Without them there is a wait at the gate, which on a time-critical consignment is the part you cannot afford.

The University of Essex receives into departments rather than one central reception, so we need the department name as well as the address.

What we send and what fits

Usually the smaller end of the fleet. A short wheelbase at 450kg with a 2.1m load space suits instruments, small assemblies and single items, and it reaches doors that nothing larger will.

A long wheelbase at 3.3m or an extra-long at 4.2m covers panel and glass work where the length is the constraint rather than the weight. Anything longer than a van door travels on the flat bed at 2.7m and 800kg, which also means the piece comes off the side rather than being turned inside a load space.

Every class is listed on the fleet page, and UK pallet sizes explained covers standard against Euro where a piece travels palletised. Our fleet is FORS accredited and renewed for 2026.

Where Colchester work goes

Witham and Chelmsford south on the A12, then towards Basildon, Brentwood and London. Braintree west on the A120. Clacton-on-Sea and Harwich east.

Other services we run in Colchester

Same-day courier where the consignment is robust and timing is the only requirement. Next-day courier, which at forty miles is frequently the better arrangement for a delicate item because the hour can be chosen. Two-man delivery where the far end needs two people. Planning, routing and sorting where the same movement repeats.

Colchester questions

The handling agreement rather than the pace. Same-day already means one van and no depot. A fragile booking settles the handling first: who touches the item, whose signature it goes against, and what we do if the packaging will not survive the A12.

No, and it is not a service we offer. We will tell you at your own premises if the packaging is not suitable for the journey.

A day ahead lets us choose the hour and the vehicle, which is worth having at forty miles. At shorter notice we will give you a window we believe rather than an optimistic one.

Severalls. Direct access off the A12, estate roads and yards, so the vehicle reaches the door and the carry is short.

Tell us when you book. The council's own employment land study recorded access and servicing problems on that estate as well as the parking, so we bring a smaller vehicle and ask for somebody to meet the driver.

Which face it is. That changes where the blankets go and where the straps sit, and it is the sort of detail worth a sentence at booking.

Yes, with access arranged in advance. Give us the gate, the named contact and the pass arrangements at booking.

Yes, upright and supported on the long wheelbase, or on the flat bed at 2.7m where the piece is longer than a van door. On the flat bed it comes off the side rather than being turned inside a load space.
